1) guinea pigs have 258 bones in their body. Humans have around 206 so that’s quite a lot of bones.
2) you can often see a guinea pig push a hammock, or a any kind of cozy with their head. They do this because in nature they sorptive live in caves and they feel like their cave is too narrow so they push it with their head.
3) Guinea pigs use their whiskers to „see“ in the dark. That’s why you shouldn’t trim them as they’re important for recognizing obstacles.
4) If guinea pigs are unsure of their surroundings or explore new terrority, they often form a piggy train, so all of them follow each other in a row. This gives them safety. However, it is believed that domesticated guinea pigs also do this for fun, and not necessarily for safety, during floor time.
5) a guinea pig’s teeth grow around 1,5mm a week and up to 6 mm a month. That’s why hay is so important to grind their teeth down.
6) Sometimes guinea pigs like to mark their territory by sliding their butt on the floor. Boars are more likely to do this but females do it as well, especially if they’re ready to mate.
7) Guinea pigs can have the hiccups. This can happen if they get spooked or if they ate their food too fast. It’s usually over as soon as the guinea pig has calmed down or stops eating, and they often look a bit weirded out when it happens.
8) Guinea pigs have a huge amount of taste buds, around 17,000. As a comparison, Humans have about 9,000 taste buds while dogs have around 1,700.
9) The last fact is that Guinea pigs not only eat their own poo but when they have digestive problems they also eat other, healthier, guinea pigs poo to help their stomach.
