E4's First Self Feeding - Fish Deliveries - 1st Night Alone - Highlights - May 4, 2020 - NCTC Eagles

This video footage captures two fish deliveries (including Dad's crash landing) and feedings and E4's first attempt at self feeding. E4 does a pretty job ripping and tearing off pieces of fish while Momma Bella watches. There is lovely family interaction during the day. It was a windy day at the nest and Bella stayed close to E4. As daylight faded E4 was alone and would spend her first night without Mom on the nest. Self feeding spending the night alone both are important milestones for E4 who is 5 weeks (38 days) old. Good job E4 you are well on your way to independence; over the next 4 to 6 weeks we will see E4 self feed, wingercising to strength her wings and onto branching then taking her very first flight fledging!!!

The resident bald eagles are named Bella (female) and Smitty (male). Bella and Smitty has been together since the fall of 2018. Bella replaced the long term resident female Belle in 2018; Belle was badly injured in a territorial dispute with other adult eagles. The resident male Smitty has been at this nest since 2011 when he replaced the long term resident male Liberty.

The NCTC Bald Eagle nest is located 75 miles from Washington, D.C. on the campus of The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services' National Conservation Training Center (NCTC). The campus is located at Shepherdstown, West Virginia. The nest and territory is prime real estate located about 1/4 mile from the Potomac River; rich in resources for an active bald eagle family and at times visitors/intruders challenge Bella and Smitty for their territory.

Many thanks to the National Conservation Training Center, The US Fish and Wildlife Services, the Outdoor Channel and the Friends of the NCTC for providing and maintaining this bald eagle cam.
