Will trophy size hatchery rainbow trout from Lyndon's Trout Hatchery eat live frogs and minnows? We put that to the test and toss in trapped live minnows I collected using a minnow trap funnel type trap in a local creek. I also catch some green frogs along the bank of the pond and toss them in to see if the trout will grab them!

To trap the minnows, I use a funnel style trap which is open on both sides closed into a funnel to move the minnows inside. Once they get in, they can't figure out how to get back out since the funnel is reversed and they can't figure out how to get through the narrow passageway.
Next we build a ring minnow pen from hardware cloth, some tubing and 2 pool noodles. I'll put the minnow pen inside the pond which will float and then achor it to the bottom with a brick. The minnows are then free to eat algae without having to worry about being eaten by our pond fish. Our goal is to make a full pond ecosystem with enough natural feed that we don't have to feed our fish pellet feed anymore.
