How to make a Maggot trap + Feeding Maggots to Aquaponic Fish

Dislike 0 Published on 5 Sep 2017

This video explains how to make a simple Maggot trap using a couple of recycled buckets, some cable ties, a length of flexible hose/pipe and some silicone.
The only other tools required are a drill and a sharp knife.

The most important part of this maggot trap is that internally, it needs to be dry otherwise water will collect in the main bucket and drown the maggots before they get a chance to crawl into the collection container/bucket.
This type of trap is easy to build and cost less than $10 to make.

Maggots are a great source of protein and can be fed to chickens and fish. This particular trap is used to produce maggots that I feed to my Aquaponic fish (Jade Perch).

List of components:
1 x 20L old paint bucket with lid (Cleaned out)
1 x small bucket/container with lid.
1 meter length of 25mm flexible pipe/hose
1 x 25mm holesaw
1 x drill with 6mm drill bit
1 x tube of silicone with gun
10 - 12 cable ties
1 x cable tie cutters
2 - 3 cups of talcum powder or hydrated lime (for the small bucket to keep the maggots dormant)
Bait - any kind of meat
