Backyard Chickens - Feeding a Dead Fish to the Birds
This small fish "shark" die last night in our aquarium, for no apparent reason. All the other fish are happy and healthy, and there is no clear physical damage to the fish itself.
Anyway, knowing that fish meal (among other things) goes into chicken feed, I wanted to see how the birds would handle an actual fish just given to them. I anticipate feeding fish and fish scraps to my chickens in the future as the aquaponics system gets up and running and I start harvesting fish.
The chickens don't see very interested in it, and I think just because they aren't familiar with it. I tried chopping it up a little with the shovel to expose the softer tissue, and that sparked some interest, but still not a flurry like I expected. It's been a few days now, and I can't find the carcass, but I've put a lot of other stuff in the run since then, so it may have just gotten buried.
