Big Bear Eagles ~ Jackie Offers A Bite Of Fish To Shadow ~ Teaching How To Feed Babies!! 4.19.19

Jackie arrives back to the nest and Shadow greets her with vocals. He gets up and goes right to the fish and starts eyeing it as Jackie goes over and softly talks to him. She takes a bite & offers to #1 then moves the fish and offers a tiny bite to Shadow!! He very tentatively takes it. The female always controls the food/feedings. Here we see one adult feeding or offering food to the other. In some nests, the male will offer food to the female who will feed the babies or the female will offer food to the male who will feed them. There are many instances of tandem feedings where both the male and female will simultaneously feed the chicks.
This is all new for Shadow and Jackie has a strong presence on the nest & at the time of the feedings. Shadow is a little tentative and unsure of what to do but I have no doubt that he will figure it out soon. This was a positive step forward in her offering food to Shadow! Perhaps the next time he will offer that bite to the babies. What a joy it is to watch these eagles raise their family. Thank you for watching!
