Sustainable Aquaponics: Grow your own Aquaponic fish food

The fish in this Aquaponic system are Jade Perch which are about 9 months old. Jade Perch have quite a small mouth and once they have reached a size larger than 10cm or 4 inches they are not considered to be cannibalistic. They are omnivorous fish, which means they require both protein and plant material in their diet.

The plant part of these Jade Perch's diet consists of lettuce, spinach and wheat grass which all grow very well in the Aquaponic system and wicking beds. They absolutely love these young lettuce leaves so much so that they will leap out of the water to get at them!

This is a great, cheap, healthy, fun way to feed your fish and also helps satisfy part of their dietary requirements.

The aim is to experimentally grow and feed these fish home grown foods only (no fish pellets that cost extra money) such as lettuce, spinach and wheat grass and monitor their progress.
