Don't Over Feed Your Fish! But Why? You Oughta Know Over Feeding Kills Fish!

Even if you bought your first aquarium 5 minutes ago you’ve heard
“Don’t feed your fish too much”
But did anyone ever explain why? Well that’s what this video is all about. I know to some this might seem like common sense but that’s ok, sometimes it’s good to go back to the basics.
The first reason overfeeding kills fish is because there’re tons of fish out there that will literally gorge themselves because they’re either pigs or they don’t wanna stop eating because they’re afraid if they don’t eat it the other fish will take it.
This is why you’ll see fish swim around with food hanging out of their mouth. Gluttons.
While gorging themselves wont necessarily kill them it’s certainly not good for them, just like it isn’t good for us.
But the single biggest reason overfeeding kills fish has nothing to do with the fish eating too much, it has everything to do with them not eating it all.
When you put more food in the tank than your fish can handle what happens to the uneaten food?
It goes down and settles in the gravel or sand, it gets stuck behind decorations or gets sucked up into the filter where it get’s lodged in the sponges.
That food sits there and you might think “well the fish will get to it”.
You come back a couple hours later and don’t see it anymore so you assume everything’s ok. Well remember this food might be hidden or in the filter. If you didn’t watch your fish eat it you have no way of knowing.
Fast forward to the next day and you do the same thing again, and the next day, and the next day, you get it.
Before you know it you’ve got uneaten food all over the place in your aquarium but you don’t see it because the current in the water has carried it away and hidden it out of site.
What happens to uneaten food? Well it has the same effect as fish poop, it rots and causes ammonia in the tank.
You’re beneficial bacteria should be able to handle it up to a certain point but as the build up of uneaten food continues it get’s to the point where the bacteria can’t keep up and then, well, all hell breaks loose.
You wont even know this is happening, it’ll just hit like a bomb went off in your tank.
So how do we prevent this? Well overfeeding might be one of the biggest fish killers in the hobby but you’ll be happy to know it’s incredibly easy to prevent.
It’s very easy, just watch your fish eat. That’s not hard is it? For most fish keepers feeding time is the best part of the hobby!
Throw in some food and watch your fish eat it. If it’s all gone in like 10 seconds put some more in. Keep repeating it until your fish have had enough.
How do you know they’ve had enough? Well once they stop aggressively going after it. Once the food starts to get passed up by the fish they’ve had enough, pretty simple.
Bottom line is
Not having a bunch of uneaten food laying around is gonna make life so much easier for you from a maintenance standpoint, it’s gonna be a much healthier environment for your fish and you wont have a bomb go off in your tank.
