Majority of the houses these days have a fish tank or aquarium. But just having an aquarium is not enough. You need to know which fishes you can have in them.

For a wide community aquarium or fish tank, Mollies can be the ideal choice. They are very easy to breed and a single female can produce up to 20-80 mollies in one birth. Also, remember that Mollies are live-bearing fish, that is they do not lay eggs but give birth to fully developed molly fry. And about the apt ratio for breeding habit, it is best to have three female adults to one male adult in the fish tank.

Gestating period of the Molly fish ranges between four to six weeks. It can store multiple fertilized eggs. Do you know how long the female molly fish can carry the fertilized eggs? It can store them for nearly six months and go on to release babies for every 50 days even without the presence of a male in the fish aquarium.

Here are some Breeding Tips for you from Urban Farm:

1. Just before the birth begins, remove the female Molly from the main aquarium as the male fishes tend to chase the female ones and this can have an impact on the pregnancy.

2. Once you place the female Mollies in a separate tank wait till it delivers the baby mollies. After the babies are delivered remove the mother molly from the tank and leave her back into the main aquarium. You have to do this as the mother molly may eat up her own babies.

3. You can introduce the baby mollies into the main tank with the rest of the fish after the baby mollies double its size. Just by feeding the baby mollies three to four times a day it can start developing and increase its size.

4. On an average, mollies lifespan range between three to five years. Feed them with vegetables once or twice a week. You can feed them lettuce, throw the soft insides of cucumber, egg yolk to the baby Mollies.

5.Mollies love consuming various worms like Grindal worms, black worms, and bloodworm. Brine shrimp (live or frozen) as well are a preferred source of food.

6. You can have big plants in the aquarium so that they serve a hiding space for the fishes.

7. Once a week change around 1/4th of water from the aquarium. Never attempt to take too much of water from the tank as this will shock Mollies. Add about a half tablespoon of aquarium salt per gallon to the new water you add once a week.
