In this episode of 10 Things John and Lisa discuss one of the most popular fish in the aquarium hobby, the Freshwater Angelfish. Angels are one of the true staples of this hobby and a great addition to the right aquarium, plus their great for beginners.
Ten Things covered in this episode
#1 Where are they from
Freshwater Angelfish (we’ll call them Angels) originate from several rivers throughout south america but that doesn’t matter because 99% of the fish you’ll find in the hobby are bred and raised in fish farms all over the world.
#2 How to determine males from females
Just like Discus that we talked about in a previous episode of 10 things in it’s almost impossible to tell the difference between male and female angels.
#3 Tank Requirements
One of the good things about Angels is you don’t need a Giant tank to keep them but just like we always say bigger is always better
#4 How big do they get
Angels certainly aren’t monster fish but they’re not small either. The cool thing about them is that they get taller where most other fish get long.
They have a unique arrow head shape with a tall dorsal fin and all kinds of other fins hanging low, I call them dangly things. I never said I was an expert.
A full grown Angel can be up to 6” long and 8-10” tall all while being like 3/4” thick. Gives them an interesting look. Depending on what type of Angels you get, what you’re feeding them and what size tank they’re in they can certainly smaller or even bigger than that.
#5 Breeding
If you wanna breed Angels you’re in luck. They’re known for being pretty simple to breed
#6 Aggression
Angels are Cichlids but don’t let that scare you. Allot of fish keepers automatically assume any Cichlid is gonna be mean and wanna kill everything else in the tank.
#7 Water Parameters
Angels are very hearty and can tolerate a wide range of water parameters. We generally like to keep the water between 78-82 degrees and keep it on the softer side.
#8 Tank Mates
We’ve been talking about it the whole time, Angels aren’t really a problem fish and as long as they’re not protecting fry they really wont bother any other fish in the tank.
#9 What do they eat
Angels are Omnivores which means they like both meaty foods and foods with higher vegetable content in them.
#10 Great For beginners
As a fish keeper you have a responsibility to provide the best environment possible for the fish you keep, if this is all new to you having a fish that is easy to keep will definitely make that easier.
