Neon tetras are my favorite tetra, neons tetras are an amazing little fish with so much personality. These fish come from the amazon river, streams, and tributaries. Neons live in both, Clear, and black water. They closely resemble their cousins, the Cardinal Tetras, which have more red in them.
Keep Neons can be a double edged sword, some people find them very easy to care for, while others believe that they are in fact more difficult to keep then their cousins, the cardinals. A lot of people ask me on YouTube, "How do you keep your angel fish with the small neons? Won't they be eaten?". The answer to that is, you have to get the angel fish when they are small, and raise them with the neons, so they see them as friends, not food. Another thing is basically hoping when they get older and larger that they do not turn on their Neon friends and eat them. That is totally up to the angel fish, every fish has its own personality and i will CAN NOT tell you how a fish will behave, just like humans and dogs have different temperaments and personalities so do fish.
Neon Tetra Care:
These fish stay small and only grow to a MAX of 2"
Neon tetras come from the amazon and love a densely planted aquarium. They also love to hide among the driftwood and rock work. Neon tetras do not like to have light blasted on them. They come from both black and clear water, but need to have some cover from the bright lite, so have shaded spot for them and plenty of hiding spots.
Keeping them to school:
Keeping neon tetras to school is tricky
keep and odd number of fish, thats the basic rule, if you have an even number they will break up into two schools, also keep fish that are larger to the neons but do not pose a threat to them, that will make the fish feel more uptight and on guard, and want to cluster for protection. When you see the fish loose they feel safe, and it is best for the fish.
Breeding:
It is possible to breed the neon tetra in captivity, and in the home aquarium. Introduce a pair of neon tetras in an aquarium with no light, and gradually increase the light over the coming days.
I love neons, and they will probably be my favorite tetra of all time.
Keep a school of at least 6-7 in no less then a 5 gallon, i would really like to see these fish in no less then a 10 gallon. have slightly acid water, and plenty of vegetation, and hiding spots for these fish and you will be more then likely to have great success with these beautiful little gems of the freshwater community.,
