This is part 2 of The Ultimate Guide To Your First Aquarium, today we’re gonna talk about selecting your first fish. It might seem strange that I’m putting selecting the fish as part 2 when there are so many other decisions that have to be made but the reason I’ve put selecting the fish as #2 is because so many other decisions are gonna be predicated on the type of fish you choose. So let’s get into it.

Selecting what type of fish your gonna keep is not an easy decision to make. With so many options available to this hobby it can be pretty overwhelming. Add to it the fact that many of the choices out there wont mix well together, its a decision that can take you some time to make so plan on doing some research.

I wanted to use this video to give you some ideas of different types of fish that are available to you but understand that when you see one that you like you need to do some research on that particular fish. You can’t just run to the store and grab a hand full of fish and throw them in a tank, if you do you might be turning your tank into a battlefield or it might be like throwing your new fish into a gas chamber.

So once you see that fish you like you need to do your research to find out what that fishes needs are.
Here is a list of things to look into:
- What type of water parameters they require. This will tell you whether your tap water is acceptable for that fish or if you might need to make some changes to your water to suit the fish.
How big they can get so you know what size tank you need to set up.
What types of fish they are compatible with which will help you in deciding tank mates.
What there temperament is so you know if they are gonna play nice with the other fish in your tank or are they the type of fish that would rather be alone.
You need to know if the fish is an open water swimmer, bottom dweller or if they like plenty of hiding places, this will help you in your decorating choices.
Another thing to consider is the fishes breeding habits. Many times a fishes attitude can change in a big way if they are about to breed which could be dangerous to other fish in the tank. Fish breeding in your tank poses another problem and that is what to do with the babies, maybe you don’t want to deal with all that so you might decide to only get one of that particular fish and not even give them a chance to breed.

So these are just a few things to look for when you’re deciding on what type of fish you want to buy, in my opinion these are the most important things. I think yo’ll find that the information is out there and easy to find on just about any fish. You could literally be standing in the fish store, type in the fish in your phone or ask siri and get all of this info. It’s not information that will take you months to find.

Finding the information is easy but making the decision is not so take your time. Don’t rush this, You’re buying a new pet not just some decoration so put some thought into it and know what you're getting into before moving on to all of the other decisions that need to be made.

Special Thanks to Jennie from Solid Gold and Rick from TheRick2325 for allowing me to use some clips from their videos to show you different types of fish.
