Today, I share these five tips to help you with breeding for profit:
1) Breed fish that aren't labor intensive to breed. Breeding fish like angelfish, rams, discus, killifish, tetras, etc. is much more labor intensive than breeding guppies, other livebearers, bristlenose plecos, shrimp, snails, etc..
Breeding fish that are low maintenance makes the profit gained more valuable (you get more bang for your buck, so to speak).

2) Find a gap in the market. Breed fish that aren't readily available to your customer, whether that means a higher end guppy to sell to your local fish store or a hard to find bristlenose pleco color to sell online.

3) Weigh the pros and cons when deciding whether or not to ship fish. Sure, you'll get more money per fish if you sell online than you would get selling to your local fish store but shipping fish can be a hassle. Shipping fish is time consuming and you run the risk of losing fish in transit. Again, though, if you're fine with that tradeoff you will get more money per fish selling online.

4) Remember to keep it fun. The whole point of breeding fish for profit is to make money doing what you love. If you're not loving it, do something else. You can make more money delivering pizzas so if it's not enjoyable to breed the fish you're breeding, breed a fish that you'll enjoy keeping.

5) Automate everything you can. An automatic water change or drip system is a life saver to those of us keeping multiple tanks of fish. The last thing you want is for your maintenance schedule to suck all the joy out of keeping fish.
