Dozer and Miss Jay, the female red blood parrot cichlid, are trying to make us some babies by laying eggs. Watch as our Blood Parrot cichlid fish pair attempts to spawn.
Male Red Blood Parrots are infertile so we will not get fry out of this event but it is still neat to see them try breeding.
Breeding Parrot cichlid fish females start by laying eggs on flat surfaces or in caves and the male would then try to fertilize it. Blood Parrot cichlid pairs can breed every 2 weeks to month. Most blood parrot fish will lay their eggs in an area they can easily defend and protect.
Often before red blood parrot cichlid fish are ready to begin the breeding process, they will prepare an area, usually on a flat surface. They often will spend a lot of time digging and preparing their fry nests. Blood parrots mating will often show pairing behavior and may shake at one another. Breeding pairs will become highly aggressive. It is best to stay out of your blood parrot fish cichlid aquarium during mating time as they will become extra territorial and aggressive. Any time their are eggs they will defend and protect them. When breeding, mating blood parrot cichlid fish it is recommended to remove other tank mates, as they will become more aggressive with them as well during spawning time.
Male blood parrot cichlids are infertile generally speaking and cannot actually breed or mate in a successful way. Female blood parrot cichlids are fertile and will readily produce viable eggs. We recommend taking care when breeding and do not recommend creating random mating pairings of blood parrot cichlid fish with other males of different species. Always breed responsibly.
