This Video will help you with information about Caring for a Pregnant Fish. When a Fish is Pregnant most use a Breeder Box in the main tank & Isolate the fish from others, the breeder box might be little small for the Female & the Fry. Hence moving the pregnant female to a breeding tank will be less stressful for the pregnant fish as it provides more place & you can decorate the tank for the fry to escape once they are born.
Live- bearer fish like Molly, Guppy, Platy & Sword tail may eat their own Fry. This set-up of a breeding tank will minimize the casualties at birth. I move the pregnant Fish at least a week before birth. Below are the details I used to set-up this Simple breeding tank.
1. Tank - 20 liters or more
2. Heater - Temperature should be around 78 to 82 degree F for most Live-bearer Fish & Fry, Molly, Guppy, Platy or Sword Tail.
3. Rocks - Larger rocks help you create pockets of hiding places for the Fry.
4. Sand - I use sand as it acts as cushioning for the rocks & drift wood & also helps the beneficial Bacteria to colonize.
5. Plants - Floating plants are recommended. I used Java Moss on the drift wood & the clay pot, by instinct the molly fry swim to the surface as soon as they are born. Plants offer food source & great hiding place.
6. Filtration - Mild Filtration is necessary, Bio-sponge makes a Good option.
7. Drift wood- I used drift wood to anchor the plant & help it float.
8. Water - The water & filter media was from the main tank to minimize change in water level.
9. Food - The number of times you feed the fish is normally 2 times a day, however pregnant fish has to be fed 3 times or more to gain strength.
