Using a Divider for Breeding Aggressive Cichlids

Even with a small size difference, if you get the angle right you can make the space large enough for the female to get across while keeping the male on one side.
I like to slant the divider away from the male so either when the female is running or the male is chasing neither fish runs into the bottom of the divider (M \ F or F / M). This is one of my favorite techniques for getting an over-aggressive male used to the female to a point where she feels more comfortable with him. Usually I use colored dividers for my flowerhorn so they can't see each other 24/7 but in the case of breeding and acclimating a male to a female I will use a clear divider.
I make and sell custom dividers 3/16's thickness any size you want, any color you want so let me know if you need one.
