I just bought these Blood Parrots a week ago, and apparently they are pretty happy. I woke up today to see my rock covered in eggs and it made their funny behaviour make so much sense. They've always chased each other around, the male would swim on a funny angle near her. They dug up all my sand, and they would always chase the third, younger, Blood Parrot to the other side of the aquarium. I now know that this was all a part of their mating dance.
They are being good parents so far, fanning the eggs, and protecting them quite enthusiastically. The male actually tore his fin a little protecting the eggs. I was finally able to sex them quite easily, as they are in breeding mode so their tubes are quite easy to see. The female is the smaller of the pair, with a rounded tube. The males is pointed.
Although I do feel bad for the younger BP who has been shunned to the corner of the tank, because apparently the breeding pair thinks their territory is two thirds of the aquarium.
But more on the young one. When I got them a week ago the little one was mostly gray and black, with a tiny patch of cream colour on its chin. Its crazy how fast he's turning orange. He's now half orange in only a week. His fat little body makes me pretty partial to him or her, I think he or she is my favorite. I can't wait til I'm able to sex it, as its quite annoying calling it a he she Lol.
