Is breeding petstore quality bettas bad? In this video I go over my thoughts on my current breeding choices. I also give you updates on all the tanks as well as the baby bettas. They are starting to develop spots and hopefully they will turn into nice Koi patterns as they continue to grow.
When choosing Betta fish to breed. It is important to understand that it is difficult to find the "perfect" fish both genetically and structurally. Usually getting a good quality fish from a reputable breeder is the best way to go. Imported fish tend to be good but its difficult to know for sure. Keep in mind that even fish from breeders CAN be very inbred and this can cause a lot of health issues. Pet store fish have unknown origins so it is difficult to tell if they they come from a good gene pool which is usually why breeders advise that people not use pet-store/petco fish to breed.
I choose Petco bettas to start my line because they were easy to acquire and I believe that the female very well represents what I think is a good marble koi betta. In the future I would like to get better quality bred fish for my line if I continue to breed.
