I tried a tank mate with my Oscar once . It didn't work out too well with the pictus catfish. I kept Drifter by himself after that.some people have had luck with convicts, Jack Dampsy's, silver dollars, fire mouths, severums, green terrors, Texas cichlid, the rule of thumb is if you want an oscar with tank mates, best to go with a 90 gallon minimum.

2 oscars 125 to 150 gallon just to accommodate the bioload and territory space is 50 gallons per fish. As they get older it gets more difficult to keep the nitrate levels down in a 55 gallon tank for one oscar let alone 2. My oscar reached 12 inches which is an average size. Some have gotten as large as 14 to 16 inches on the website I frequent it's not unheard of to see an oscar reach 14 to 16 inches in size. most don't get past 12 inches. http://guppy-fish.com/how-many-10-gallon-aquarium-tank/

In ten months they go from 2 inches to 10 inches, they don't stop growing until they reach 4 to 5 years old. They're garbage disposal units and eat anything that will fit in their mouths. They will eat green veggies, fish, fish pellets, brine shrimp, blood worms, krill. If you want tank mates, you have to keep in consideration that the tank mate needs to be able to hold their own. Even if you do pair off 2 oscars, there is still no guarantee that in 2 years from now that the peace will last between them. It's hit and miss between 2 oscars. they do have awesome personalities. A cichlid trait seems to be if they don't like their aquarium set up, there is nothing stopping them from redecorating the tank. Uprooting plants, moving decorations and rocks around to their liking. You want to avoid anything with sharp edges as an Oscar can spoke easily and hurt themselves easily. You want to avoid anything with sharp edges because they are a pretty clumsy fish but can move at a drop of a dime. due to their intelligence and sulking behavior has earned them the nickname of drama queen. Mine sulked and swam backwards for 2 days when I moved him into his permanent home. They have been known to sulk up to a month. I can go on all day from what I have learned over a nine year period.
