Avalanche trout hatchery:

In 1863, Dr. Francis Day imported eyed ova of Rain bow Trout to introduce trout in Nilgiris for the first time. The earlier attempts made to establish trout in Nilgiris were not successful till 1906. Mr. Henry C. Wilson, a pisciculturist constructed the Trout hatchery at Avalanche and the first batch of eyed Ova brought from Newzeland were successfully hatched out during 1907. Subsequently a consignment of 10,000 eyed ova of Albino strain of Rainbow trout were imported from Japan during 1974 and 35,000 eyed ova of rain bow trout were transplanted from Himachal Pradesh during 1997-98. The Avalanche hatchery is utilized for hatching eyed ova of trout, rearing trout fry / fingerlings every year and ranched to replenish the stock of trout in the streams.
The breeding season of the trout is from October to February every year. During the breeding season wild breeders are caught from the streams and eggs/milt are collected by stripping method. The fertilized eggs are spread over the grills kept in the hatchery boxes. Water has been allowed to pass through the hatching boxes at 6 to 10 litre per minute. The eggs attain the eyed ova stage within 14-16 days and the hatchlings come out in 24-26 days. The fries are fed with “minced liver and boiled duck (or) hen’s egg”. The fingerlings are grown till it attain 50-70 mm. size and stocked in the natural streams. The spent breeders are also let in to the wild stream.

The Assistant Director of Fisheries, Ooty is issuing licences for angling either annually, monthly, weekly, weekend or daily at the rate fixed by the Government. Spinning and fry fishing are permitted. Angling is prohibited during the breeding season.
