In this episode Living Land looks at exciting developments in the fish farming industry. We visit a mixed farming operation in Phetwane, Limpopo, which includes the growing of fish in outdoor dams, and then we discover an impressive fish breeding technology centre at the Gariep Dam in the Free State, which has the potential of transforming aquaculture in our country.

The outstanding nutritional qualities of fish are well known, and this valuable form of food holds the key to solving many of our food security and nutritional problems. At the ultra-modern fish breeding technology centre at the Gariep Dam, South Africa and China have formed a partnership to build a multi-million rand centre in a bid to develop rural aquaculture and create employment in the country.

Although the promise of aquaculture for income, employment and food supply has been widely recognised, the development of this industry in South Africa has been disappointingly slow. Now, with this initiative up and running, the prospects for a flourishing aquaculture industry are looking much brighter.
