Three different betta types illustrated + some fascinating facts about this popular and easy to care for fish. Elephant Ear Halfmoon Plakat, Double Ray Crown Tail, and the more common Betta splendens siamese fighting fish, are all my aqua pets. Betta's have come a long way from their ancestral home in Tropical Asia, where their natural coloration were dull colors of gray, greens and brown. They were traded in the USA in the early 1900's. Through selective breeding, many variations have resulted in fin shape, length, and colors. Betta's continue to increase in popularity as newer and more colorful specimens are being offered for sale in pet stores. With proper care, betta's can live up to 7yrs. They require room temperature water and must be kept separate from other males. It is the male that takes part in raising young by building a bubble nest at the surface of the water where the fry will develop. Once the female lays the eggs, the male fertilizes them and chases her away. The male betta then tends to this bubble nest by assuring all fertilized eggs stay there, and quickly fetches any falling eggs.
