Hello and welcome to another fish review at what the fish gallery! Today well talk about the golden severum cichlid. It is a beautiful and robust cichlid. It is related to another famous cichlid, the discus fish, its actually its cousin but that evolved differently. The golden severum is bred in captivity, its actualy wild colours are yellow with black stripes, but golden severums are goldish orangish with stripes on the head.
Althought it’s a cichlid but it doesn’t show your typical cichlid behavior, it shows a wide range of behaviors. If you feed it and take care of it, it will be friendly with you so much so that you can even hand feed it. The tank setup is simple, youll need lots of drift wood and provide it as many hiding spaces as possible and use hardy plants. By giving hiding spaces, this fish feels secure which in turn will not stress it. Water parameters are as following, Temprature should be between 24-28 celcius, PH 6.5-7, GH Moderate and lighting should be moderate as well. It is an omnivorous fish, just like discus. It takes plant based and meat based diets. It favourite food is green peas. It also loves blood worms and you can use the 3 in 1 pallets from optimum that I use. The minimum tank size should be 45 gallons per fish if you want to breed it you’ll need at least a 100 gallon for two fish. It is relatively easy to breed the discus, the temperature should be kept between 24-26 degrees, Ph between 6.5-6.9, the tank should be bare bottom and use a smooth vertical or horizontal surface so it can lay its eggs on it. We currently have two golden severums in the gallery, both are males and we will soon be getting a few females. We will be doing specie based tanks soon, as currently we have community tanks. The disease for this fish are unique, The most common disease is the hole in head disease. Where it gets a hole in the head due to a bacterial infection, if not treated it can die in a matter of days. The first thing you do is shift it to a quarantine tank, raise the temperature to 30 degree celcius and use anti bacterial medication. If you want to know what medicines to use, click on the link above in the I- icon where we discuss it in detail. So do you like the golden severum. If you have a golden severum and want to share something about it, please comment below. You can also share your tanks and fish on our facebook page. This was todays fish review hope you liked it.
