Electrical stimulation exercise limits side effects on muscles injected with Botox

Dr. Walter Herzog from the University of Calgary investigated a novel way to prevent the weakening of these non-target muscles. Dr. Herzog's research team injected Botox in one of the hind legs of rabbits once every month for six months. They noted a 40% decline in muscle strength of the non-target muscles in the adjacent hind leg. Interestingly, when his team provided electrical simulation exercise three times a week on the injected leg, they succeeded in preventing a 50% decrease in muscle strength of the adjacent leg. Dr. Herzog's lab hopes to combine Botox injections and electrical simulation exercise to limit side-effects of Botox therapy.
