According to a new study, resveratrol, a compound found in red wine, may help to slow down the body's aging process. Researchers from Virginia Tech found that treating older mice with resveratrol for one year helped to protect synapses, the connections between neurons, from the normal wear and tear of agin. The natural deterioration of synapses play a vital role in common issues with gait, balance, and motor coordination that effect many older people. According to the researchers behind the study, the neuroprotective benefits of red wine are similar to those seen in previous research on the effects of a healthy diet and exercise.
