Drifting the horses hindquarters
This groundwork exercise is essential to a horses foundation. In this video I will demonstrate to my students how I want my horse to move her hindquarters. Have you ever experienced a horse stepping on your feet? Here's a great exercise to prevent it from happening in the future. Instead of shouldering into you, your horse will learn to lift the shoulder and move away from you. Having good control of the horses hindquarters is a good way to prevent rearing, bucking, bolting, and many other dangerous behaviors. It also helps to bend, soften, and supple a horse. Drifting the horses hindquarters on the ground is also the first step to the one rein stop.
