This exercise relaxes the horse and helps them to tune in to the rider's cues.
When you take the time and care to do this exercise to 'soften the horse's face,' your rewards are a horse that becomes tuned in to you. It is as if you pick up the reins and the horse says, "Hello. What shall we do together?"
This exercise helps the horse to relax and to develop a moist, sensitive mouth.
An additional benefit of this exercise is that it can be used to relax horses that are nervous or over-energetic.
