Topline muscle development of the horse is vital for the horse to be able to carry its rider correctly and easily. In order to develop a strong topline muscle, make sure to always engage your horse's back while riding at all gaits. "Tracking up" is a good measure of how things are progressing with the topline muscle development of your horse. Allowing the horse to stretch while riding and doing hill work and pole work will also help to develop your horse's topline. A good way to check your horse's topline is to check for shallowness in his back in the area right behind where the saddle sits. A good topline muscle development means the horse is being ridden correctly from back to front and is always engaging his back while being ridden.
