The royal horses are in town and they are ready to showcase their skills at the Gala of the Royal Horses at Ford Arena.
They are called royal horses because they consist of horse breeds that rose to prominence in Europe with royalty during the Baroque era.
Christine Drentwett is taking her horse Rico for a ride at the Plum Nearly Ranch off Hebert Road.
"His name is Rico and you'll see him in the show because he has his own part," says Drentwett.
Practicing his piaffe move here...
He is one of thirteen horses that perform with horse riders like Christine at the Gala of the Horses. "He comes out in the stallion parade. And that's another thing about the show it's very entertaining because it explains how we get the horses to do what we do,"says Drentwett.
Performers train and exercise their horses daily.
"A lot of gymnastics, a lot of good healthy working in the morning, and then in the afternoon a lot of training but not constant....in spurts so that he's happy to do what he wants to do," says Drentwett.
These performers travel with their horses. Some have families that come along too.
"Actually I met my wife in a production like this in Germany," says Toby Drentwett.
Toby Drentwett helps his wife Christine with Rico. He alsoarranges the music for the performance.
"I think horses really enjoy working to music but at first also you have to make sure the horses know the sounds which is a big part of when you put the show together is to get them used to the sounds and the lights," says Drentwett.
Showcasing horses that are special.
"We show breeds that you usually don't see live. The beautiful Andalusians, Friesians, and Lipizzans that we are able to bring to the table here it's not something that you see everyday in the barn," says Drentwett.
A show that combines stunning horses with a quality of horsemanship that makes the performance a world class event.
