This video is the second in a series of equine remedial exercise programming clinics directed by Caroline Lindsay showing highlights of sessions specially formulated for veterinary physiotherapy students. Without sound, it is subtitled to explain to the viewer some aspects of how the exercises are carried out and how the horse responds by changing its movement patterns.
The students carried out a comprehensive assessment and palpation of a young riding horse. They identified four areas of concern which could be addressed with remedial exercise. These were 1. hypertonic neck muscles (serratus cervicus and rhomboideus) 2. Bilateral hypertonic lumbar muscles (quadratus lumborum, longissimus, iliopsoas) 3. A mild incoordination of the hind limbs possibly due to the presence of lumbar muscle tightness 4. A mild restriction of forelimb extension. All could be addressed with various progressive suppling exercises.
This 8 minute video shows the results of the lunging phase and how the horse responded to the various remedial stretching exercises, including ground pole work and the effects of working in a figure of 8 bandage wrap. Slow motion clips enable the viewer to focus on the movement patterns.
