How to make a fun, physical and cognitive exercise for dogs and cats: Surprise Box!
You wonder what to do with all these boxes that you keep for recycling? Buddy and I, we’re going to show you exactly what to do.
Hi, I’m Julie. I’m a Tellington TTouch practitioner for companion animals, a Bach Foundation Registered Practitioner and a certified dog trainer specialized in behaviorism. I’m here to help you enhance the relationship you share with your animal companion!
In this video, we’re going to show you what to do, and how to do a surprise box with all what you have gathered.
What is a Surprise Box?
A surprise box is some exercise, physical exercise and cognitive exercise for doggies, but also cats. For instance, they need more exercise and you don’t have too much time to walk them. So it’s a kind of occupation that is nice.
How do we make a Surprise Box?
We use tubes. Smaller, bigger tubes. We can use Kongs, different colors. We can use simple boxes, like this. Egg boxes, very interesting. And I’ll show you how to use that kind of box too. We use different treats, kinds of treats. Good taste, good quality. And, why not, pâté? A good pâté. Vegetal pâté, or even fish pâté. Oh, and by the way, here is Buddy, my assistant.
Shall we start?
Egg box. We can put different treats. Like this. At the beginning, make it easy. If your dog is not familiar with that game, then use little towels where you can put treats in it and just fold it to make it easy for your dog to grab. Use whatever box where you can put just one treat, or more, and maybe a piece of fruit, that he or she likes. Add it in the shoebox. A tube like this is really nice. So, you do something like this so it’s closed. You add a bit of dry food because it’s carton and it might become mushy. Here I only have two kinds of treats, but you can add different kinds, all what he likes and what is good for his or her health, of course. Make it fun, have fun. Have fun together making it. Usually, it’s not a meal; it’s just a snack during the day.
What is the benefit of a Surprise Box?
It’s entertaining, fun, destructive, and it helps doggies to use their nose, and their hands, and their intelligence to get into what’s in the box. So, make it interesting. We made one, here. And I want to show you what we do with that kind of box. We’ll use the pâté. Because it’s wet, we don’t want the wet to be on the carton. We don’t want the doggie to be eating the carton either. What we do is we put some pâté into the plastic and we put this piece back inside of the box and close it, not too well, but just like this so they can enjoy something different.
So what you do with your box is that you give it to the doggie or the kitty before you leave so they have something interesting to do and they will associate the fact that you’re leaving the house with something nice.
