Poodles are active, smart and athletic dogs. They are very clever dogs and are the 2nd most intelligent dog breed in the world, only behind border collie.
The poodle was originally bred in Germany as a duck hunter. The world "poodle" came from the German word "Pudel" which means “to splash in water”, a reference to their work as water retrievers. Later they were standardized in France and became very famous there. Right now, it is the national dog breed of France. In France, they are also known as "Caniche" or " Duck dog".
