Working in water is in Nikki’s genes. Portuguese water dogs worked on fishing boats for centuries. They herded fish into nets, retrieved tackle and delivered messages to other ships or back to shore. Nikki is training for a competition where she’ll put her ancestral skills into practice. The competition is based on the work the dogs used to do in Portugal. With radio communication, fishing boats stopped using Portuguese Water Dogs like Nikki. Now water trials are the only way to see the dogs exercise their unique abilities. If Nikki can stay focused and overcome her fear of other dogs she’ll have a chance at winning another title at the competition.
Bert Davis entertains rodeo fans all over North America with an act called The Garbage Man’s nightmare, starring Kelsey, a nine-year-old Australian shepherd. When the rain turns the arena into a muddy soup, this means getting filthy. But the mud-splattered Kelsey wins the hearts of the crowd and may even garner Bert and Kelsey a nomination for best speciality comedy act.
In Rotterdam, the police canine unit has trained dogs for highly specialized scent detection work. They can match the evidence to a suspect by scent. Aron, a Belgian Malinois, is the newest recruit. These dogs usually train for a year before they can do the job, but Aron has managed to learn it in six months!
