How do I stop my dog barking?! Did you know that barking is actually the NUMBER ONE PROBLEM that people have with their dog?
Many owners view barking as nuisance behaviour and something that needs to be stopped at all costs. However, it is important to remember that barking is your dog's way of communicating something to you and it is up to you to work out what he/she is trying to tell you. Barking may seem random and unprovoked to us humans but it isn't. We don't want to stop ALL dog barking - especially when the barking is an alarm alerting us to danger, but what we DO want, is our dog to stop barking when we ASK them to!
Some dogs will bark at the slightest noise, disturbance or movement and this repetitive, continuous barking is not something you need to put up with. In fact it can drive you (and your neighbours!) insane. The behaviour may be long-established but it can definitely be improved. Read on!
The Two Most Common Causes of Barking:
The number one cause for unwanted barking, (especially if the barking is repetitive and seems to be directed at nothing), is due to pent-up nervous energy. Your dog will exhibit this type of behaviour, when he's not getting enough exercise.
Obviously, all dogs vary and a Chihuahua doesn't need as much exercise as a Husky, nor a 15 year-old as much a three year-old. However, most dogs function best on around 90 minutes a day. You may believe that your dog is getting as much exercise as he needs, but if the barking is coupled with other agitated behaviour (fidgeting, perhaps acting more aggressively than you'd expect or want, restlessness, destructive behavior) then he almost definitely needs more.
Fortunately, the solution is quite simple: you just have to exercise him more. Try getting up half an hour earlier in the morning - it will make a big difference. If this is really not possible, consider hiring a dog walker to walk him in the mornings and/or evenings. And if this is impossible too, then you'll just have to resign yourself to having a dog that is constantly agitated and barking. Although I will say, if you cannot commit yourself to walking your dog for at least one hour per day, then really the kindest thing to do would be to re-home him. I don't believe anyone should take on the responsibility of owning a dog if they can't commit to that minimum.
The second most common cause of barking in dogs is too much 'alone time'. Dogs are social animals: they need lots of attention, interaction and communication.Without these things, they become anxious and on edge. If you're at home with your dog, but not paying attention to him, and he's spending a lot of time barking at what appears to be nothing, he's probably bored and lonely and would benefit from a healthy dose of affection and attention. When you're at home together, you need to make sure you spend a good amount of time with your dog: playing, training and just hanging out. Your dog is most content as your companion - don't deprive him of this basic happiness.
