Senior Dog Balance Exercise: Stepping Stones

Senior dogs need regular mental and physical exercise, too. In fact, regular training and appropriate movements can help keep them strong, engaged and thinking, not to mention the fun factor that's a part of positive reinforcement training.

"Stepping Stones" is a simple and easy way to help your dog with balance, proprioception, coordination, heeling and more. Here Dory, a 15 year old Standard Poodle, enjoys her "workout." She is no longer able to climb the stairs but she loves this exercise that makes her think and move but which doesn't require hind end strength.

The criteria for clicking in this video*:
Front paws on first "perch", then all four on two perches, then hind feet on last perch. Additional clicks are for attention at heel position. I do not want her to move forward on her own but rather wait for me to invite her.

I work both sides which helps Dory be more flexible and bilaterally balanced.

I use small platforms spaced about the distance of Dory's comfortable stand position. If you don't have platforms, you can use books or pieces of wood or anything that's raised 1-2" and is stable and non-skid.

Have fun with your senior dog! She can still learn and have fun!
