The Dark Side of Chicken Care

Hi, this is Marjory Wildcraft. On this edition of Homesteading Basics, we’re going to the really dark and gruesome side to answer the question, “Are chickens cannibals?”

All right, if you’ve kept a flock of chickens, then you’ve probably experienced this. You walk into the pen, and you see a dead chicken. Now, what you may not know is that if you leave that carcass there for a while, the other chickens will eat it.

Look at this footage. Now, I want to assure you that that chicken was not under any duress at all. There was plenty of grain, plenty of water, and plenty of forage. It was doing this by choice. Chickens really see other dead chickens as a high-quality protein source. That is just the reality of life on the homestead.

This is Marjory Wildcraft, and I’ll catch you on another episode of Homesteading Basics.
