Green Space: Raising backyard chickens and important tips

Dislike 0 Published on 24 Jan 2019

It’s thought that chickens began to be domesticated around 6,000 years ago for cockfighting. So it’s safe to say that chickens have been part of human life for a long time.

Today, they’re bred for meat and eggs. And while most of us buy our poultry and eggs from the supermarket, some of us dream of keeping chooks in the backyard and enjoying a farm-to-table experience at home.

In this episode of Green Space, Fabian Capomolla (The Hungry Gardener), shows us how to keep hens at home.

But before we get started, you might want to know some of the many benefits to keeping chickens — and it’s not just their eggs.

Backyard chickens eat up food scraps (so you waste less food), their droppings are full of nitrogen, (which helps maintain healthy soil) and they eat insect pests. So, not only do you and your family get fresh eggs, but your garden will thank you, too.

Having hens can sound like a hassle. You’ve got to figure out which breed to buy, where you should keep them, and how to feed them correctly, but with Fabian’s tips, it’s much easier than you think.

He shows us the important steps to keeping chickens; from having a safe and dry coop for shelter, to what to feed them to get the best out of your chickens.

Not only will this benefit you and your garden, but you’ll love having them as pets, too. Plus, you can show off to guests that the eggs you cook with are laid right in your own backyard.
