A huge day on the duck adventure, one of the longest and stressed filled days this spring so far. What started out as a good day with lots of positive things happening in the hatcher turned out terribly bad later in the afternoon.
The hatcher seems to be working perfectly, lots of ducklings pipping through and one even completely hatched by the time I got up today at 6 am when I my first visit to the hatcher. Lots of chirping is taking place in the hatcher, it's quite noisy but not that stressed out chirping I had on last week's hatch.
I was working in the garage making a water tray for the ducklings in the barn and Dug came running over to the garage to get me or say hello to me who knows I'm not that good with dog talk. I noticed all the ducks hanging around with each other and I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to get the ducks down to the creek.
Dug and I started with the herding and I noticed a seriously bleeding duck among the flock, needless to say a trip to the creek was out of the question now and I had to deal with a seriously hurt duck now. I got the fishing net and caught the duck to give it a medical examine to determine what were its injuries were and it turns out it had been attacked while Dug and I were out in the yard.
This is not a good thing, as wild animals normally don't come to hunt in broad daylight with people & a dog in the yard. So I've got the worse kind of predator one that isn't afraid of humans...
Washed up the poor duck and yes it was bitten, Dug must of startled whatever was in the yard and it dropped the duck and ran, that is why Dug came running over to the garage to get me to let me know something was wrong in the yard.
Got the shotgun and went for a hunt on the property hopefully I find what is doing this, only to discover another dead duck down in the swamp. So earlier this week the tuff of feathers with blood on them I discovered when Dug and I got back from the vet was indeed a predator attack and the fact the ducks have been acting strange the last 3 days tells me I need to go on predator alert.
Still have to get the barn ready for the new ducklings tomorrow so the ducklings in the barn need to get their own new space today, on top of a predator hunt I didn't count on.
Dug spent some time in with the ducklings in their new enclosure and was a perfect angel with the ducklings, he gets so concerned when they show signs of distress, he actually helped a duckling back onto it's feet that was flipped on it's back and couldn't stand up.
Lots of hatching going on in the hatcher when I finally got back to the house later that night, the duck adventure seems to have a lot of curve balls these days.
