I had to go to town to get some more feed for the ducklings in the barn which I didn’t count on, and when I got back I spotted the fox in the swamp. He was right in the middle of the ducks down by the creek and the ducks were freaking out, I couldn’t take the shot with the shot gun it was just too far away and I would have ended up hitting a duck with a stray pellet.
So now I’m wearing a rifle on my back instead of the shot gun, this is the 2nd time I’ve spotted the fox and both times he’s down at the creek not up near the yard, so I need something that has better range than a shot gun.
Only bonus to carry the rifle is that it is lighter and shorter than the shotgun so it’s a bit easier on my body working with it on my back around the yard.
Because I went to the swamp first to check the snapping turtle bait lines, it got the ducks seriously worked up seeing me go to the swamp and back, they were completely worked up into a frenzy to get out of the pen.
The ducks went through 4 bags of feed in less than 24 hours that is the most yet, over 320 lbs of feed and it’s only going to get worse I’ve got to get these ducks to stay down at the lake to help with the feed consumption.
Plus the duck staying in the yard they are destroying it, because we are getting so much rain the yard is soft so they are drilling everywhere making lots of holes everywhere.
This morning I wasn’t planning on filming and I’m glad I did end up taking the camera with me, the ducks decided today to go to the lake almost 75% of the flock went to the lake today.
I decided to go down to the creek with the ducks after the morning rush out of the pen and the ducks that hadn’t already gone to the lake started to follow me down to the creek, ended up getting a ton of ducks down to the creek and the lake. It was awesome to see so many of them go to the lake, but it was because of me going down there that caused them to go, they feel safe around Dug & I even though Dug was in the house sleeping.
The fox has got a good path cutting across the swamp, I’ve got to cut more bulrushes down in the swamp to make the clearing wider down by the creek so I can get a better chance of getting off a good shot at the fox with the rifle.
It ended up raining all day, I tried to cut some bulrushes down but the weed whacker kept giving me shocks from the spark plug wire I was so wet I’m going to have to wait till it stops raining before I can cut anymore bulrushes down.
I ended up spending the day in the rain cleaning out the pen, since the rain made all the duck poop really soft it was the perfect opportunity to wash out the pen, plus I ended up power washing the nesting boxes out.
I wanted to clean them before I piled them up and covered them won’t be needing them until late fall again after the cull. Don’t like putting things away dirty, just means when you go to use them again you need to clean them and when I need them again it’s going to be much cooler out which sucks working with water when it’s cold.
