Slow morning rush with the ducks coming out of the pen today, I think it’s because yesterday they didn’t get to do their morning rush because I was leg tagging them they’ve forgot.
I’ve got about 40 more juvenile ducks to catch today from the barn side of the pen, stopped yesterday as the little guys were getting too excited with me catching their friends in the fishing net.
Today is the first day the juveniles I introduced to the flock in the pen and it looks like 95% of them are staying in the pen, it’s a whole new world for them baby steps.
The reduction in egg production I truly believe is not from the new feed but the fact that almost all my adult female ducks are in serious moult, when we were doing the leg tagging I had to handle all the ducks and the female adult ducks looked terrible in very serious moult only 1 in 20 females had good looking feathers.
The ducks once they got out of the pen today went to the lake and spent the whole day down at the creek in the swamp, they didn’t even come back early today.
I had a surprise planned today for the duck adventure but once again Mother Nature had other plans, Dug and I headed down to the lake and the ducks were coming back so Dug and I herded them back to the creek for the surprise and then we discovered Mother Nature’s surprise.
Dug found a poor little Rouen duck that had been seriously hurt by a snapping turtle, almost all the flesh was ripped off its leg. Then right in front of us another duck was getting attacked by a snapping turtle, you can see it in the video the poor little duck trying to get out of the water after the rest of the flock panicked and left the creek.
Had to put the little duck down there was nothing I could do for the little thing the damage was extensive from the snapping turtle attack.
I got my shot gun loaded with OO buck shot and went back down to the swamp to see if I could get a shot at the snapping turtle that is killing the ducks. This makes sense now why the ducks won’t stay at the lake this year, I wonder how many other ducks I’ve lost to the turtles.
When I was coming back from the swamp I had to rescue an adult female duck, it looks like she has gotten raped once too many times and can barely walk, I set up the dog cage hospital for her. If she doesn’t get better I will have no choice but to end her life, which I hope isn’t the case.
It was funny later in the night, we lost power to the property and the lights didn’t come on in the pen and the ducks didn’t go inside. I didn’t realize the ducks use the lights as a signal to go into the pen at night, they were seriously confused and all of them were in the yard in front of the gate not knowing what to do or it was a serious traffic jam.
Once they all got into the pen there was a huge line up to get into the bathtub, it was so funny they were packed into the bathtub like sardines with a line up waiting to get in.
