Dug caused a bit of pile up during the morning rush standing in front of the gate when I opened it this morning, the ducks got seriously confused on what to do with Dug standing there.
Well egg production is basically over for resale I’m getting enough eggs for my breakfast and I’m just going to have to accept it.
Decided last night after figuring out the square footage of the pen and how many ducks I have they each have about 7 sq/ft per duck which is lots of space for them to sleep and eat, they don’t need anymore room plus it would have been a huge job for really only a month since the cull starts mid September.
The ducks started heading to the swamp even before I got the water filled in the pen for the ducklings, they are wasting less and less time every morning going to the swamp.
The ducklings in the barn ate almost all their food last night almost 60 litres of food.
This weekend the plan is to tag the juvenile ducks that are free ranging, I have to get the 240+ 30 day old ducklings out of the barn side they are big enough now so I have to tag this weekend.
When I was getting the feed ready to go the swamp I had to get some of the ducks out of the pen and I found another dead Rouen female duck, it was Stevie Wonder duck. Here vagina looked seriously swollen up I think she was sexual abused, she wasn’t there 2 hours ago when I went looking for eggs.
Dug keeps disappearing and it turns out he’s down at the swamp with the ducks swimming with them in the water, the ducks let him get really close to them when I’m not around, I wish I could catch it on video it’s priceless to see him swimming with the ducks alone.
I had to tell Dug to stay in the yard while I herded the Muscovy ducks to the swamp, but he gets too excited when I herd the Muscovy I think it’s because they don’t move fastest enough for him.
Herding Muscovy ducks is like herding rocks.
Dug did another good job helping me herd the ducks and he did a fantastic job of herding them up the creek, he seems to know exactly what to do.
Dug and I got the ducks to the lake finally and then the trouble started the adult seagull that has been flying around the property this spring was seriously harassing he ducks at the mouth of the creek. I’m pretty sure this is the adult seagull that was teaching its young how to steal ducklings from inside the pen that I shot a couple weeks ago.
The ducks just refused to stay at the lake, to the point it was almost a panic for them to return to the swamp/creek area on the property. Dug and I tried our best and I didn’t want to freak the ducks out so if they wanted to come back let them for now, obviously something isn’t right down at the lake.
Dug and I went down to the lake, I took my hedge trimmers with me so I could trim back the bulrushes along the creek in the canoe. Something told me to take the shotgun and although I didn’t get a chance to use it I now know what I have to do, the Seagull has to go I found a freshly killed Rouen at the mouth of the creek exactly where the Seagull was swooping down harassing the ducks.
I’ve never heard of Seagulls killing things other than baby birds or really small birds, it had to have drowned the duck. There was a lot of peaking on the poor ducks head and the bill looked broken, and it was really fresh the kill.
I’ve keep the gate closed to the pen all day and the ducks have circled the pen countless times today since they came back into the yard. I finally filled the feeders up and opened the pen around 7 pm and the ducks did their rush into the pen for a mid evening snack.
