Although ducks natural habits is managed by natures tide, wind, weather and also the moon, general ducks fly inland at dusk, to inlets and estuaries out on the mudflats, shallow ponds where freshly made flashing's occurring after recent rains ducks feed on chaff and grass seeds and resting up for the night. There are ten species of duck which can be legally shot in Scotland: The Mallard, Teal, Wigeon, Pintail, Shoveller, Gadwall, Tufted duck, Pochard, Goldeneye and Scaup are all legal quarry; coastal wildfowling and decoying cater for the majority of the ducks shot in Scotland although most are shot flighting into and out of inland ponds.
Duck, many of which are seed and grass eaters, usually come inland at dusk to feed and spend the night on flight ponds, flashings and ponds, returning to the mudflats or large lochs and shore line at the breaking of dawn. Inland duck shooting generally takes place at last light in the evening when they come into feed. These feeding locations are sometime mature crops or stubble fields feeding on barley or wheat left behind by the combine harvester or ponds which have been fed with barley or other suitable feeds to attract the ducks. There are a variety of duck species which can be legally shot in Scotland. Where driven pheasant & partridge shoots release duck as an added species mallard would be the bird of choice.
