Assisting Duckling Hatch: When does a duckling need help?

This Muscovy duckling had pipped more than 24 hours ago, and we saw the sticky, gooey yellow membrane inside that indicated that the humidity had been too high. This sticky membrane would have trapped the duckling if we had not helped it.

So, gently, I peeled the shell and sticky membrane off. When it was mostly off, I put the duckling back in the incubator and let it finish the hatch by itself. It not only lived, but also grew into a healthy, active duck!
