Mama Mattie and his ducklings 9 July 2011

After a raccoon attacked a mama duck and her nest as the ducklings were hatching and being chased away midway through it's feast by a neighbor, Mattie took it upon himself to take care of the remaining 3 ducklings and 3 eggs. We *did* have to have a funeral and bury one of the eggs, but Mattie's done a GREAT job of being Mama-Duck to his brood while we wait for their feathers to come in so they can go back to the wild.
