Today is the official 1 year anniversary of the Duck Adventure on YouTube over 388 duck videos later. I would of never thought last year when I went to pick up my original 171 ducklings which was suppose to be 125 ducklings would take over my life and create this great community on YouTube.
Thanks everyone for the support and encouragement the past 12 months.
The hatch is going fantastic this time around, they are actually hatching 2 days early this hatch, the official hatch day is July the 11th and they started to hatch on the July 9th, and it's looking like tonight I'm going to have to clean out the hatcher and move ducklings to the barn a full 2 days earlier than I normally would.
Looks like 10 Muscovy ducklings have hatched this hatch, not the best out of 63 eggs but much better than previous hatches.
My neighbour called while I was editing yesterday's episode around 10:00 am he was across the road cutting hay in the field and said he spooked the fox out of the field with the tractor and he crossed the highway and was headed directly towards my house.
I went up in the back roof of the house and started using the jack rabbit caller laying on the hot metal roof waiting for him to show up, wasted over an hour and no sign of him. I had too much to do today and couldn't waste anymore time on the roof so I gave up and started my work for the day.
Got all my brush clearing tools ready, something told me to put the shotgun on the logs by the clearing just in case the fox shows up while I'm clear cutting the property. Went back to the garage to get the brush trimmer on the way back towards the clearing I was walking past the pen and ducks all came up to the gate quacking their heads off, I thought they figured out I was going to let them out since I was right beside the pen cutting.
But they keep quacking and then I realized they were staring at the swamp with their necks stretched out all the way, they were telling me something was wrong and the fox was back. I put the brush trimmer down and grabbed the shot gun off the log, took the safety off and started to look towards the swamp.
Sure enough the ducks were right the fox was back and within shooting range to, first shot I think I missed him or just nicked him on the rear, then he ran right across where I had clear cut last night which gave me a perfect side shot, out of a total of 16 pellets in two rounds of OO 12 gauge Buck Shot 8 pellets hit him, not bad for the first shoot was about 100 feet and the 2nd shot was around 80 feet away.
The fox is finally dead and the ducks are safe again in the yard, fitting on the 1 year anniversary we have a good hatch taking place and the fox predator is history and the ducks get their freedom back, a great day on the duck adventure.
I could believe how big the fox was he felt like he weighed around 20lbs and was a male, so there is a female around with pups, hopefully she doesn't know where the ducks live and it was the male that was hunting here.
If it wasn't for the ducks I would of never got the opportunity to get the shot at the fox, I would of missed it completely it's like the ducks knew I would take care of it for them the way they were telling me something was wrong in the yard.
Ducks took over an hour to come out of the pen after I shot the fox, they stayed inside for a while but when they did come out they were in no rush to go back in later that night.
The way the ducks are acting it's like they know the fox is dead and hanging in the tree, or they are just really stupid and have let their guard down again.
The hatch is going great; so far only 5 ducklings have pipped and died in their shells, I rescued 22 from their shells which I know based on previous experience would have died if left. 42 I'm leaving in the hatcher tonight that aren't ready to move to the barn yet and about 50 ducklings are going to the barn tonight.
I didn't realize this but this hatch is 2 days early they are not even suppose to hatch till July 11 so moving 50 to the barn on the night of the 10th is really 2 days early, these guys are really strong little ducklings.
