Video Description Below

This morning at 5;00 am I got up and looked out my window it was -22°C with a nasty wind and the ducks were playing in their bath tub, crazy ducks.

Ms. Icecovy the female Muscovy duck has built a massive nest, it's freaking huge and everyday she adds more to it. Over the last couple of day she hasn't gotten off the nest much, actually she only gets off the nest to get a drink of water and eat very little, and that isn't happening much either.

When I clean the hospital slash nursery out she hisses at me, plus the last 3 days cleaning out the hospital she hasn't defecated much at all in the enclosure. I'm totally leaving her alone not going near her, she has laid down the law and I know where the line is now.

I went out to do my chores like I do every morning only to discover another nasty surprise, another dead female duck. This time it was a female Rouen duck and the strange thing is where I found the body laying tight against the barn wall there was no blood insight.

There were no tracks anywhere, no spot in the snow where she was actually killed that I could see on the first observation. At first I thought she was killed last night but after further investigation of the dead duck body, she was still warm to the touch. Now considering last night was -22°C with a nasty wind there is no way she was killed last night, she had just been killed early this morning.

I walked around the whole pen looking for tracks because I think I might have screwed up and forgot to turn the electric fence on. With the fact her body was obviously moved from the original kill site I just don't think it would be another owl at this point.

After going around the whole pen and looking all over the yard I found absolutely no tracks from any type of animal near the pen or in the yard, not even squirrel tracks so no land based predator was the cause of this, it had to be an raptor predator which means another big owl (Great Horned Owl).
Now during the egg recon I noticed it strange today all the ducks were inside the barn not outside like they usually are, they are obviously scared today from this killer getting one of their fellow ducks.

I took another walk around the inside the pen and found the kill location, the raptor had killed the female Rouen duck right in front of the barn, I found the pool of blood and a whole bunch of feathers. So this explains why the ducks are freaked out, she was killed right out side the barn entrance the ducks use.

Well I know what I've got to do night, I'm going to leave the dead Rouen female duck's body in the pen for bate for the owl when they come back tonight, and it's time for me to wait with the shotgun again.

This time I decided to wait in the house for the killer to return, sitting in the back of the truck wasn't an option this time, one it's too freaking cold out and after the last time I don't want to put my body through that again it took too long for me warm back up.

I'm going to wait upstairs in my bedroom in front of my patio door with the shotgun, I turned on the pen lights plus the Olympic lighting and set up the camera in the window to film the whole event.

Unfortunately after waiting till 11;30 pm no owl showed up even though I could hear it in the swamp it was close to the property but not coming into the pen area. I had to get some sleep and called it a night, the ducks were safe tonight they were locked up inside but the owl was still out there, hopefully tomorrow night I'll get him and end this killing of my ducks again.
