Filming the Feathers: A Wood Duck, Mallards and Forced Copulation

Another Silly Video by Susan Kirby. Waterfowl tend to crossbreed more than other species of birds, and wood ducks (Aix sponsa) and mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) in particular hybridize with a large number of other species. And while mallards are generally monogamous, it is not uncommon for nonpaired males to force copulation on a female mallard.
In this video, Woody, the resident wood duck at the Pond in Central Park, swims with a mallard pair. Other mallards join them, and at one point a female mallard is chased under a bush by Woody and several male mallards. Woody and one mallard chase off a third male, and the wood duck and mallard male then force copulation on the female.
