Today is a big duck hospital day and it wasn't planned, I had some serious treatments to do and I had to deal with the nutritional short falls of Ms. Icecovy the Muscovy female duck in the hospital that has stopped eating and drinking.
The crazy nasty female Pekin duck with the eye infection is crazy one minute hissing at me and hates me and next she is courting me.
Ms. Icecovy the female Muscovy duck has developed green diarrhea this isn't good, the last time I had to deal with green diarrhea the end result was a dead duck last year when the Muscovy got Botulism. So needless to say I'm a bit panicked and need to address this today. She needs to be cleaned out so that means I have to come up with a diarrheic so I called my vet to get his opinion and advice on how to handle this.
Ms. Icecovy hates me now and doesn't like me near her at all, even with her gimp leg she does a pretty good job of trying to get away from me.
The nasty Pekin female duck with the eye infection hisses at me and even bite me when I give her treatments; she is the first duck to ever bite me. But on the good side her eyes are amazing they have healed up perfectly and show no signs of infection now at all.
The Vet gave me instructions on how to clean out Ms. Icecovy and rehydrate her after her treatment, basically mix the Epsom salts 1&1/2 teaspoons to ½ cup of water (125ml), and based on the ducks weight of 6 lbs or 3 kg I need to treat .9kg or 30% of her body weight, which translates into 90ml of Epsom salt solution maximum, but he recommended 10% not the max 30% so I'm going to give her 25-30ml of solution.
He warned me that I need to re-hydrate her ASAP afterwards he recommended 30-45 minutes after the treatment that I give her 150 ml of fresh clean water.
Another problem is Ms. Icecovy is so weak she is not eating at all or drinking so I have to come up with a way to feed her today also. I came up with a solution I took 100 grams of pellets and put them in the blender and turned them to dust so I could mix the dust with warm water and use a syringe to put the food slurry down her throat. Sort of like gavage when they want to force feed ducks for Foie Gras except this is for good not to make her liver fattier and enlarged.
So I guess we'll call this medical Foie Gras for the good of the duck, she needs to eat there is no other way.
The poor little Pekin female with the eye/sinus infection is not getting a good impression of me, all I keep doing is sticking things down her throat she is going to hate me forever. ----------------------------------------------
