It's been over 2 months since Rocco passed away and it was time for me to get another dog, this time I wanted to adopt a adult dog and the universe had one waiting for me the day I made the decision.
Introducing "Dug the Dog the Duck Protector" he's a natural for the duck adventure, it's going to be so exciting seeing him with a couple thousand ducks this summer.
He's 1 year and 5 ½ months old and he's a Mastiff cross his parents were a European Mastiff and French Mastiff. I had no idea until the other day European Mastiffs are actually a herding dog so I scored the perfect dog and new really loving friend.
The Muscovy drakes are doing the most mating of all the ducks, they are really muddy actually they are even dirtier than the female ducks these are some seriously busy drakes.
The lake isn't thawed yet still has a lot of ice but its changing colour and now the ice is that slush black so any day we could have open water, the swamp is open but the lake isn't yet.
Egg recon is getting very serious now most days the duck eggs are around 40+ eggs, so it won't take long to fill the incubator up with 1,200 duck eggs.
Now Dug the dog didn't become a natural by accident with the ducks, he had a nasty lesson the very first morning he was here, him and I went out at 6:30 am to do his business and I stayed quite and let him run around and check the yard out. It didn't take long for him to see the ducks in the pen and he went towards the pen to check out the ducks, not in an aggressive way but more of a curious type of way. The ducks took off across the pen when he got close and Dug pushed against the wire and got a 9,900 volt shock, so now he thinks ducks flapping their wings means a nasty shock follows.
So when the flock takes off quick or flaps their wings Dug stops in his tracks and doesn't pursue the ducks at all, perfect he's learned the golden rule of herding ducks "Don't Rush or Crowd Them"
When I was filling the duck bath tub I discovered Dug loves the water spraying out of the garden hose, so the ducks have got some competition for garden hose action.
Today I've got planned to start cleaning out the duck pen of all the winter's feces, so I'm going to go and get my neighbour's tractor to help make the job easier, unfortunately the tractor is in town not at his farm down the road so I've got to leave Dug here and go into town and get the tractor.
When I got home with the tractor I couldn't believe Dug was running around the yard not on the rope, he chewed it off and decided to chew my 5/8" heavy duty garden hose into pieces and it seems the ducks came up to watch him do it. The ducks were right up at the house when I got home and Dug wasn't chasing them at all or they would have been much farther away from the house.
While I was shovelling duck feces in the duck pen I didn't even notice that a bunch of Muscovy had left the yard and gone down to the swamp, Dug actually brought it to my attention the ducks were down at the swamp and not in the yard, he's a natural at this duck thing.
Dug makes it so much easier to herd the ducks now, the ducks don't go all over the place when I try to get them to go in a certain direction now, Dug really helps keeping them going in the direction I want them to go in.
Turns out 6 Muscovy went to the swamp and didn't come home that night, they stayed in the swamp.
