Ms. Icecovy the female Muscovy frostbite victim duck is doing so much better, but she is still weak and doing a lot of resting but that is expected considering what this poor duck has gone through. She's stopped trying to make a nest and moves around the hospital and sits in different places, no eggs either.
She is due to start moulting soon considering her feathers look really bad, she has to start pretty soon. And once she gets that behind her she should start laying duck eggs again.
The Pekin female ducks are dropping eggs all over the pen again, it seems with the warmer weather they don't stay in the barn as much and come out early in the mornings and basically drop eggs anywhere.
Right now duck egg production is down but that is going to change very soon, April we should see a massive explosion on egg production. This works out perfect for my plans for the incubator and the massive duckling hatch we are going to start here on the duck adventure.
The crazy spring weather is starting, one day it's +10°C then it's -20°C then it's -6°C then it's -10°C mother nature is so confused this time of the year.
What I have noticed is the ducks getting seriously louder as the days get longer and warmer, it's mating season the females are seriously quacking to drive the drakes nuts. It's so loud after I leave the pen my ears actually ring like I've been at a concert or a loud bar.
The female ducks seriously need to get breed and they are making sure I know this; very very soon the drakes are going to get reintroduced in the flock again, very soon.
Some more nasty weather coming the next few days, -20°C nights coming which feels so freaking cold after you've had +10°C days.
This morning it was +3°C when I got up but the temperature is falling to a high of -10°C and tonight it's suppose to go to -20°C.
While I was changing their water in the bath tub at the end of the day the female Rouen ducks piled into the bath tub and had a duck orgy. This had to be the most ducks I've seen in the bath tub so far there was actually no more room left, they were piled on top of each other.
The last week I've been seriously focused on getting my incubator situation taken care of, and the universe has come through for us on the duck adventure. After doing a lot of research and talking to other duck breeders I have to get a big automated incubator to handle the sheer volume of eggs my ducks are going to produce. I need an incubator that can hold at least 1,000 eggs based on the 79 females giving me 30+ eggs per day once they start laying again in April.
Now since I'm going to have basically 30+ duckling hatching everyday once it starts I need a dedicated Hatcher doing it in the incubator isn't going to work since this hatching process is going to last 45-60 days non stop. So I'm going to have to build a dedicated duck egg Hatcher which is so much easier to build. I've been on the internet researching the controllers I need to properly do this, I learned my lesson from last year's failed chicken egg hatch and I do not want a repeat.
This is a once in a life time opportunity to pull this off hatching 1000+ ducklings minimum this spring and I'm going to do it right this year, I'm so excited!
